The Rescue Project was created by Fr. John Riccardo and his team at Acts XXIX. To begin to explain it, I will use the following for the Acts XXIX website:
Why Rescue?
We passionately believe that the most urgent task is the compelling proclamation of the gospel, one that not only shares it in an attractive – and concentrated – way, but that also offers people a way of seeing reality, and of making sense of the world, history, and life that is vastly different from the story our modern culture tells.
Until this happens, the Christian faith is often experienced as a mere set of rules and disciplines, and simply going to Church isn’t likely to lead a person to embark on the great adventure that is following Jesus and continuing His mission of the rescuing of this world.
We don’t think most people have ever heard the gospel.
Who is it for?
The Rescue Project is for anyone and everyone! It appeals to those who have been walking with Jesus for years, as well as those for whom Jesus is only a figure in ancient history. The Rescue Project is ideal for use in parishes, homes, workplaces, bars, prisons, schools, dorms, and more.
What is it?
Simply put, an experience of the gospel surrounded by food, conversation and prayer.
The Rescue Project seeks to proclaim the gospel in a compelling and attractive way over eight weeks in a small group format. This experience is imbued with beauty, authentic humanity, and accompaniment.
The Rescue Project runs for eight weeks. For the first seven weeks, it consists in a shared meal, an “episode” of the Rescue Project content, prayer, and discussion. The final week is the “retreat” which is longer and includes Mass as well as two “episodes”.
The way in which it is designed (1) will help us build up even stronger community in the parish centered on the Gospel and on Jesus.
(2) It will also give us a way to share our Catholic faith with greater confidence.
(3) Finally, it will give us a Biblical worldview, and deepen our own spirituality and relationship with Jesus.
We want as many people to come as possible. Everyone can get something great out of this experience. Whether a teenager or a nonagenarian, married or single, everyone in every state in life needs the Gospel of Jesus. (It may be too intense for those who are not yet in High School.)
Since this is such a blessing and we are committed to making this experience available to everyone, we will provide child care so those who have children can attend.
Who should come?
First, you! Also, your spouse. Also, your kids (if age appropriate)! Also, your friends! Everyone and anyone!
Do you have to be a participating Catholic to come?
No. The message of Jesus Christ, the Good News, is meant to be heard by everyone. Whether you are a daily Mass goer, have been away from the Church for a number of years, are a member of another Christian community, or have never darkened the door of a church in your entire life, this is for you. We are all meant to hear the Gospel. If it is the first time or the ten thousandth time there is something for you in the proclamation.
